Lebanon might be tricky to visit, but if you make it there, you have to see Baalbek. Once known as Heliopolis, or the city of the sun, it was one of the most important Roman cities during the reign of Augustus. (That’s 1st century BC for all you non-history buffs). There are three major temples honoring Jupitur, Venus and Bacchus, each beautifully designed with poppies, grapes, lion heads and other symbols. It’s right in the middle of what’s now a modern town, so you can literally wake up and have a view of the ruins. If you need more convincing, the wine in Baalbek is amazing!
