We’re a passionate team with a vision

Over six years ago, two scruffy Australian web developers looked at the online travel market and wondered:

“How hard can it be to build a travel search site that worked the way people think.”

It turned out to be really hard, and it’s a quest that continues to this day and will continue well into the future. And whilst the team has grown and now spans the globe, the vision remains the same.

Meet Adioso's DNA.

  • Fenn Bailey
    Co-founder & CTO

Fenn conceived Adioso in his home city of Melbourne, Australia in 2007, after a spontaneous trip to Thailand with friends enlightened him to the emergence of the low-cost airline segment, the consequent increasing affordability of leisure travel for ordinary people, and the inadequacy of search tools on airline and travel search websites. Fenn’s friends were thrilled when his flight-finding tool was able to alert them to hidden deals to cool places, inspiring them to take trips they hadn’t been planning. A brilliant computer programmer since his teens, Fenn has overseen the development of three versions of Adioso’s world-leading flight search technology, culminating in the Wingtip search engine completed in 2012.

  • Tom Howard
    Co-founder & Product Manager

Tom had been a friend and business partner of Fenn’s since their time as tech support reps in an internet call center in 1999. When Fenn suggested the idea of building a new travel search engine, Tom was skeptical; it was clear that that there were huge technology and commercial barriers to building a good travel site, and it was hard to imagine how two scruffy outsiders from Australia would stand a chance. But Tom liked a big challenge. In previous years, he’d built ecommerce applications and designed products to challenge powerful incumbents in the taxi, ticketing and telecommunications industries. On further thought, travel seemed like a logical next step. Tom now oversees consumer product development and growth marketing, and contributes to the software development of the consumer product whenever he gets the chance.

  • Noah Jacobson
    Engineer

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Noah’s background as a computer engineer and mathematician had seen him work in a variety of roles for Washington, DC companies servicing the defense and national security industries. Feeling itchy feet, he negotiated with his employer to telecommute while driving around the United States in a motorhome for a year, followed by a year travelling around the world learning to surf. Noah joined Adioso in late 2011, excited by the opportunity to build the perfect tool for planning future surfing trips. He’s made key contributions to Adioso’s search technology and user interface, as well as bringing a much more organised approach to our software development process.

  • Daniel Wearne
    Designer

A contemporary of Fenn and Tom through the Melbourne startup scene, Daniel started as a contract designer for Adioso in late 2012, when it seemed the right time to add polish to the site’s user interface. Daniel soon found it to be among the most challenging roles he’d ever undertaken, and that only a full-time commitment would suffice. He closed his design agency and became a full-time member of Adioso in early 2013. Daniel has earned accolades from around the world for his work on Adioso’s interface, particularly for his blog post detailing how he went about making Adioso’s complex functionality work responsively for mobile devices.

Prior to Adioso, Azim served as Head of Strategy at Jetstar Airways, the largest low cost carrier in the Asia-Pacific region, and as a Project Leader with the Boston Consulting Group, focusing on the Travel sector. Azim started his career leading Interactive Marketing with the start-up Despegar.com, which today is Latin America's largest OTA. Azim earned his MBA from the Wharton School, and his BA from Duke University. Travel has been a lifelong personal passion for Azim, and he's visited 52 countries on 6 continents.

    Data Scientist

Erik reached out to Adioso in early 2013, wanting Adioso to have a particular feature to help with the backpacking trip around Europe he was planning, and offering to build it himself if we’d just let him. After chatting with him further, it became apparent he was just the sort of person that belonged on the Adioso team. Erik is a data-driven scientist who researches machine learning and high performance computing. He’s interned at Google, NASA, and the FAA, and has worked as a research assistant at the University of Washington Medical Centre in Seattle. He is currently completing his PhD in computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

Another Melbourne resident, Mark had previously worked as a front-end web developer with Daniel on freelance projects. Daniel had been highly impressed with Mark’s programming talent, attention to detail, and good character, and strongly recommended him as someone who could make a big contribution at Adioso. Mark had spent a couple of months travelling around India, and on his return in October 2013, Adioso snapped him up and put him to work improving the functionality and polish of the user interface.

    Marketing Data Scientist

Originally from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Blair's passion for travel developed through her career as a musical composer, which has given her the opportunity to travel through the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, China, Switzerland and the UK. It was Blair's fascination with logic and patterns that led her to study models of time in music, and in the process she developed formidable capabilities as a data scientist. On discovering Adioso in early 2013, Blair became fascinated with the concept, believing that giving people the resources to expand the cultural context of their passions is such an important undertaking. Blair has been working with Adioso since November 2013, analysing Adioso’s data to perfect the user experience and run optimised marketing campaigns.
